Come see what life is like in Kindergarten at OCA!

Your student can join our Kindergarten class for a half day of fun and learning... While they visit, they will be tested for Kindergarten readiness as well as participate in class activities. Your student may be joined by three other students shadowing on your scheduled day. These special days are scheduled once a month in the Spring and have limited availability so reserve your child’s experience early!

Is My Child Ready?

Many parents of preschool children begin to ask themselves the question, is my child ready for kindergarten? They wonder whether their child will be ready academically, socially, emotionally, and physically for the rigors of kindergarten. The information below may be helpful to you. Please note, however, that all kindergarten students enter school with varying knowledge. Kindergarten is the year to learn to be a student, so don’t worry if your child isn’t able to complete all the items listed. Kindergarten students must be five years old by September 1.

Academic Readiness Skills

Students should be able to:

  • Write their name
  • Put together a simple puzzle of 3-6 pieces
  • Recognize a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, and heart shapes
  • Draw or trace a circle, square and triangle
  • Recognize rhyming words
  • Name basic colors
  • Tell opposites of words
  • Count to ten
  • Identify alphabet letters
  • Pay attention to a short story
  • Identify and sort objects by color, size, shape

Social/Emotional Readiness Skills

Students should be able to:

  • Interact with others
  • Take turns and share; show empathy for others
  • Go to teacher for help
  • Practice self-control
  • Follow simple rules
  • Speak understandably
  • Talk in complete sentences
  • Separate from parents
  • Carry out 3 simple step instructions
